Feel abit ashamed that I am too busy and tired this year to do anything really special for him....(will seriously consider cooking for him next year when our house is ready though. wink!!!) so end up I just gave him a big ang bao to buy the PDA non-camera phone to replace his super "lok kok" one (dear, u totally shd chuck that old hp away already!!) and brought him to dinner at Shashlik, an old skool coffeehouse that has opened in Fast East Shopping Centre for more than 20 years.
Reviews online had already given us a mental preparation that we should not expect any good service here and that we must order a main course each. True, this place sounds like bad news, buttttttt it turn out not to be too bad at all!
First of all, when we stepped into the place, it was still fairly empty and we were attended to very quickly. The first course was the much raved about Borsh Soup.....which was really chunky and flavourful! It was a pretty good match with the warm bread that was served together with the soup. Yummmyyyy.....
For main course, we order Beef Fillet for the man and Garlic Steak for me, both medium. The meat is soooooooo succulent and tender. Every bite seems to melt in your mouth, again, this is not a joke nor exageration. Of coz, it's a bit too much to compare it with Lawry's steak, but this is really good and quite value for money (priced at $25). Their beef is a must try for first timers.
Wanted to order the baked alaska for dessert (which I heard is vanilla ice-cream, with bits of cold cold peaches and crumbly butter cake layers), but was sad to hear that it is not available on Tues and Wed. Of well, this just gives me the perfect excuse to come again next time. Nevertheless, we decided to give their Banana Flambee a try. It turned out to be banana pan fried in butterscotch and brandy...and served with cold vanilla ice-cream. This dessert may not be very unique, but it is not too sweet and the portion is just right for us coz we are quite full already actually!
All in all, this place did not disappoint us. Xian-Jun, hope you enjoyed this simple night out. Wish you a very Happy 32th (oops!!) Birthday........Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday Happy Birthday.........Happy Birthday to youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu................. Stay Healthy and Cheerful and Guai Guai always k?

(The real thing taste better than it look...hehee.....photos were taken under bad lighting conditions and with a point and shoot.....not that it explains my bad skills...oh well.... no one is perfect =P)
